Year 2017: The Most Expensive Soccer Defenders Of All Time



Virgil Van Dijk: The Dutch defender top the list breaking the previous record of €20million. Virgil Van Dijk transfer from Southampton to Liverpool for a reportedly fee of  €84.5millionafter a long chase that past the summer period, extending to the eve of the January transfer window.


Benjamin Mendy

Loosing the top spot to Van Dijk, he still remain the most expensive full back in history. He made headlines after Manchester City paid a transfer fee of €57million for his services.


John Stones: 

Moving from Everton to Manchester city in August 2016 for a fee of €55.6million, he remained  the most expensive centre back in Manchester city, before Virgil Van Dijk joined Liverpool.



Kyle Walker: 

Pep Guadiola wanted a full-backs defender at all cost prior to the 2017-2018 season, he convinced his club management to bring in Kyle Walker from Tottenham for an agreed transfer fee of  €51million. As of then, Walker  was the most expensive full back defender in history, until his futire team mate Benjamin Mendy broke that record few weeks later.


Nicolas Otemendi: 

He moved from Valencia to Manchester City prior 2017-2018 season for a whopping transfer fee of €48million.


Rio Ferdinand:  

He first made news headline when he moved from West Ham to Leads United for a transfer fee of €26million, and then later transfer from Leads United to Manchester United for a fee €46million during the 2002-2003 league season.



Leonardo Bonucci: 

The veteran Italian defender made waves when he moved from Juventus to Ac Milan prior 2016-2017 league season. Ac Milan paid a whopping sum of €42million to sign in Leonardo Bonucci.



Thiago Silva: 
He made a move from AC Milan to PSG before the start of the 2012-2013 league season for a transfer fee of  €42million and has won four league 1 titles.


Lillian Thuram: 
A world cup winner with the French National team in 1998, he moved from Parma to join league rival Jeventus for transfer fee of  €41.3million. He has won 2 Seria A tittles for the old lady.


Dani Alves:  
He switched from Sevila to Bacelona before the start of 2008-2009 league season for a whopping fee of  €41.5million. Obviously Sevila made a good profit for their investment, as they initially bought Dani Alves for just  €1million in 2002. Alves proved his worth with his Bacelona team by winning 6 Laliga titles, 4 Copa Del Rey Triumphs and 3 Champions League Title.


Shkodran Mustafi: 
The German international got his first real chance in the Seria A league side Sampdoria. But he came into lime light after a 3years spell with Laliga club Valencia before Arsenal showed interest in signing Shkodran Mustafi for a reportedly fee of  €41million.


Davinson Sanchez: 
The Colombian international joined Premier League side Tottenham for a fee of €40million before the start of 2017-2018. He made his debute when Ajax signed him for  €5million from the Columbian club side Atletico Nacional before Tottenham came for him a year later.


Eric Bailly: 
He joined Villareal in January 2015 Laliga league season for 5.7million. One year later he joined Manchester United for a fee of €38million.

Antonio Rudiger: 

The German defender first arrived Italy club side Roma for a mere fee of €9.5million before the start of 2016-2017 league season. And thereafter, Chelsea paid a whopping sum of €35million transfer fee for his services to fortify their defense line.


Victor Lindelof
He joined Manchester United from the portugues club Benfica for the sum of €35million at the start of 2017-2018 season.
