On the heels of the country national team failure to qualify for the quarter final of 2018 World Cup, the Japan national team captain has confirmed his retirement from national duties with his country.
In a statement released on his instagram account , he says: "I have decided to end the chapter of my career with the national team with this tournament,"
Following this shocking announcement from the 34 year old captain, it is expected that the national team will make a huge changing squad, with another announcement expected retirement from former AC Milan striker Keisuke Honda.
Makoto Hasebe has been on duty for the national team for 12 years under five different coaches. He has also to his career a German cup with Eintracht Frankfurt which they won last season
It is recalled that the captain has played in the last previous world cup in South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014, and this year world cup makes it his third appearance at the world cup.
The Belgium national team came from behind to win 3-2 in their first match in the knock-out round, which also saw ousted out the Japan national team.
The Japan side will be looking forward to participate at next year Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirate and they may likely look to hire a new national coach.
